People looking for the fastest browser are looking for the wrong thing. Between Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Brave the difference on a normal page comes down to tenths of a second, and you can’t see it with the naked eye: what wastes the most time in front of the screen is the advertising that loads.
That’s where this ranking starts, split by operating system. Three things count: how much content the browser manages to block, how much data leaves your computer, how tightly it ties you to an ecosystem that is awkward to leave later.

How I chose
Six criteria, in order of weight.
How much advertising and tracking you can manage to block. The criterion that weighs the most, and the only one you can verify yourself in ten seconds: install uBlock Origin and see which version the browser lets you install. On Firefox the full one arrives, with over 300,000 filter rules. On Chromium browsers, after Manifest V3, there is only the reduced version, capped at 30,000.
How much advertising and tracking it blocks by default, meaning how protected you are without having to configure anything.
Page load speed, cold (first open) and warm (repeat visits, with the cache already full). It’s the first thing people ask me and you’ll find it at the bottom with the numbers; the reason I don’t put it first is that today load time depends more on what the page downloads than on the browser drawing it.
Memory and battery usage, that is, how many resources it needs to run decently.
System integration, a concept that counts for a lot on macOS and almost nothing on Linux.
Rendering engine independence. Today Chromium covers the vast majority of web sessions. When a single engine makes the rules, standards become one company’s product decisions.
Who I analysed. The top five desktop browsers by market share according to Statcounter, that is Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Opera, plus Brave, which measurements almost always count as Chrome because it presents itself to websites in the same way, and which carries a weight on the criteria above that its apparent share doesn’t tell.
Windows: Firefox, with Edge as the zero-effort alternative
The podium is decided by what you can block, default privacy and engine independence, in that order. Below, the full ranking, with Chrome and Opera.

In first place I put Firefox because it’s the only one of the five where the world’s most used blocking extension still works in full. With Chrome’s switch to Manifest V3, the full version of uBlock Origin is no longer installable on Chromium browsers: what remains is uBlock Origin Lite, which works with a cap of 30,000 static rules against the 300,000+ of the full version. In practice that means less advertising blocked, and on a laptop also less CPU and less battery. On top of that, it’s the only one that has Total Cookie Protection and anti-fingerprinting protection already active fresh out of the box, without you opening the settings.
Second, Edge, the sensible choice for anyone who doesn’t want to change anything. It’s preinstalled, it’s among the most efficient on power consumption and it stopped being the fallback browser it was years ago. The price is the amount of Microsoft it brings into your home between Copilot, notifications and suggestions: you can turn almost all of it off, but “almost” is the right word.
Third, Brave, which does the same thing as Firefox arriving from the other side: blocking is inside the browser, not in an extension, so Manifest V3 doesn’t touch it. On blocking it’s the most effective of all five; it sits behind Edge only because it’s still Chromium and because you have to install it on purpose, while Edge is already there.
Off the podium, Chrome, which remains the reference for compatibility and dev tools, but is also the one that protects you least of all five out of the box: as an everyday browser today I only recommend it to those who need the integration with Google services. Last, Opera: it blocks ads on its own and the included VPN is tempting, but it contains features not everyone might need.
macOS: Safari is still the right default

Here the deciding criterion is system integration, followed by battery consumption and ad blocking.

On a laptop Mac, Safari remains the choice I’d recommend to anyone without a specific reason to do otherwise: it’s integrated with the system, and on battery life it plays at home. The native content blockers of macOS and iOS are excellent and don’t depend on Chromium extension rules, so the Manifest V3 problem mentioned above doesn’t apply here.
The limits are the same as always. Dev tools behind Chrome, reduced customisation and no vertical tab interface, which the other four have had for a long time.
If you’re looking for a more flexible browser, in second place there’s Firefox. Third, Brave, same protection with nothing to configure but with a resource (and battery) draw you notice on a laptop. Fourth, Edge, which on Mac works better than people expect and is the sensible choice if your work computer is Windows and you want to sync bookmarks and settings. Then Chrome, the biggest battery hog of the group: that alone is enough to rule it out as the main browser on a laptop Mac. Closing the list, Opera, which on macOS brings nothing the others don’t do better.
Linux: Firefox, and not out of nostalgia
On Linux, ad blocking and rendering engine independence weigh the most; system integration, which is decisive on macOS, doesn’t matter here.

In first place, Firefox, and the reasons are three. It’s the default on all major distributions, so it’s the one that gets the most attention from developers. It’s the only one where ad blocking still works in full. And it’s the only non-Chromium engine available on Linux with a community behind it. On an operating system built to be independent, it’s a sensible choice.
Second, Brave, which on Linux arrives already protected without installing anything and without depending on extension rules. Third, Chrome, if you can’t do without Google services. Fourth, Edge: it works fine, but installing Microsoft’s browser on Linux only makes sense if the rest of your day lives inside Microsoft 365. Last, Opera, which only ships as a Deb or RPM package: if your distribution isn’t one of those, it’s already out.
Two names worth knowing on Linux stay out of the ranking because they don’t make the top five by share: Chromium, which is Chrome without the Google parts and is what I’d install instead of Chrome if you don’t need account sync, and Vivaldi, the most customisable of all (stacked tabs, split screen, side panels).
Four recent events
Tracking and ad blocking split in two. It’s the consequence of Manifest V3 and it’s worth repeating: on one side Firefox and Brave, where blocking works as before; on the other all the Chromium browsers, where a reduced version works.
Chrome was not sold. In September 2025 the judge rejected the divestiture requested by the Department of Justice, imposing constraints on default search contracts instead, the very contracts from which most of Mozilla’s revenue comes: Firefox’s future runs through there. In 2026 appeals started from both sides and hearings are expected between the end of the year and early 2027: the story isn’t over, but for now Chrome stays where it is.
AI browsers arrived. OpenAI’s Atlas, Perplexity’s Comet, plus Gemini inside Chrome and Copilot mode in Edge. Industry estimates give the entire category 1-3% of the market. What perplexes me is security more than quality: an agent that browses on your behalf does it inside sessions where you’re already authenticated, and defences against instructions hidden inside pages are still immature. As a second browser for research work it makes sense; as a main browser I’d wait.
In Europe choice exists again. With the Digital Markets Act, iOS shows a browser choice screen and allows engines other than WebKit. The effect on shares has been modest, but the principle matters.
Speed and consumption: the numbers
The Speedometer 3.1 scores on Apple Silicon, March 2026, and the memory used with 30 open tabs, July 2026 estimates on clean profiles with no extensions.

Chrome is first on the benchmark and last on memory: they are two opposite rankings, and that’s why I don’t use either of them as my main criterion. On graphics tests (MotionMark) the positions change again, with Safari ahead of Chrome.
On page load time, cold on first open and warm with the cache already full, the difference between these five on a normal site comes down to tenths of a second. What is measured in whole seconds is something else: in the 2025 AdGuard report, across 119 news sites, the average load time drops from 11.3 to 6.2 seconds with blocking on, and network requests collapse from 299 to 145 per page. A study published in Technologies in 2020 had already measured the same thing in a lab: −28.5% with uBlock Origin, −22.2% with Privacy Badger, −11% with AdBlock Plus. It’s the same page, with the same engine: only how much stuff it downloads changes. That’s why the ranking above weighs less than the per-operating-system one.

Method note
The numbers reported above are market measurements. The RAM estimates in particular are derived from browser architecture, not from a single controlled test bench. Everything else, that is the order of the rankings, is my judgement, with the criteria stated above: if you disagree, write to me.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the fastest browser in 2026?
On synthetic benchmarks Chrome and Edge lead by a whisker (Speedometer 3.1: 49.0 and 48.5), with Brave and Safari close behind and Firefox about ten points back. On the load time of a real page, though, the difference between them comes down to tenths of a second, while blocking ads halves it: in the 2025 AdGuard report the average goes from 11.3 to 6.2 seconds. In practice, the fastest browser is the one that blocks the most ads (because it downloads less content).
Why doesn't uBlock Origin work on Chrome any more?
Chrome completed the switch to Manifest V3, which replaces the webRequest API with declarativeNetRequest and imposes a cap of 30,000 static rules per extension. The full version of uBlock Origin uses over 300,000 and can't be converted: on Chrome only uBlock Origin Lite remains. The full version still works on Firefox, while Brave has an internal blocking engine that doesn't depend on extensions.
Was Google forced to sell Chrome?
No. In September 2025 Judge Amit Mehta rejected the request to divest Chrome, imposing behavioural remedies on default search contracts instead. The Department of Justice and the states appealed the decision in February 2026, Google in May 2026: appeal hearings are expected between late 2026 and early 2027, so for now Chrome stays with Google.
Is it worth switching to an AI browser like ChatGPT Atlas or Comet?
As a second browser, if your work is made of research and synthesis, it can make sense. As your main browser, no: they are new, the entire category still accounts for 1-3% of the market according to industry estimates, and handing navigation inside already-authenticated sessions over to an agent opens security problems nobody has solved well yet. Chrome and Edge are bringing the same features into browsers you already use anyway.
Is Firefox about to shut down?
No, but its position is fragile: most of Mozilla's revenue comes from search royalties (about 75% in the latest published financials, overwhelmingly from Google), that is, from the very contract at the centre of the antitrust case. On desktop Firefox holds 6.44% worldwide, and 2026 brought a new CEO and an interface redesign. It remains the only widespread alternative engine: if you care that the web is not written for Chromium alone, using it is the most concrete thing you can do.
