On a phone, the question “which browser should I install” has two opposite answers depending on the phone in your hand: on iPhone the choice matters much less than you think, on Android much more. It’s worth knowing why before looking at the ranking.
The field is the top five mobile browsers by market share according to Statcounter, that is Chrome, Safari, Samsung Internet, Opera, UC Browser, plus Firefox, sixth by a hair but the only one that brings extensions to the phone, and Brave, which the surveys almost always count as Chrome because it identifies itself to websites the same way. UC Browser stays out of the rankings: nearly all of its share comes from Asia, virtually nobody in Europe uses it, and its track record on data handling keeps me from recommending it.
The criteria, in order of weight: how far it lets you block ads and tracking, what it blocks by default, data and battery use, extensions and sync, integration with the phone, and how much it ties you to a single ecosystem. These are the same six the picker above uses to reorder the ranking based on what you need.

Safari
iPhone: the ranking matters less than expected
Apple forces every browsing app to use WebKit, Safari’s engine. Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave and Opera on iOS are different interfaces built on top of the same engine: what changes is sync, features and privacy settings, not how fast a page loads. Anyone promising their browser is “faster” on iPhone is telling you about a difference the operating system won’t let them have.
Since 2024, with the Digital Markets Act, the rule has fallen in the European Union: browsers can bring their own engine, and the first time you open Safari the phone shows a choice screen. In practice, though, almost nobody has taken the opportunity, because shipping a separate engine just for Europe costs a lot and earns almost nothing, and the choice screen itself moved the shares less than expected.
The result is that on iPhone Safari remains the right choice for almost everyone, since it’s the one the phone optimises. The real decision, if anything, is which content blocker to pair it with: the ones for iOS work at system level with Safari and they’re effective, and it’s the change that makes the biggest difference to your day.
That said, there is a ranking here too, and it’s played out on what the browser does around the page, since speed is identical for everyone.

Safari first because it’s the one the phone optimises: system integration, native content blockers and the lowest power draw of the group. Second, Brave, which has blocking built in and doesn’t ask you to install a separate content blocker. Third, Chrome, which has a single argument here but a heavy one: tabs, passwords and history identical to your computer’s, if you live inside your Google account. Fourth, Firefox, which syncs with the Firefox on your computer and little else. Last, Opera: built-in blocking and a VPN, the rest is interface.
The “engine” (rendering) column says it all: below Safari, the other four are interfaces on top of the same WebKit. On iPhone Firefox ends up fourth through a paradox: it’s the only one of the four that offers something extra on the computer, extensions, and that’s exactly the thing it can’t bring here.
Android: Firefox, for one reason only
On Android the order is decided by what you can block, then data and battery use, then how much it ties you to one ecosystem.

First place goes to Firefox, for a reason that outweighs all the others combined: it’s the only mainstream mobile browser where you can install the full version of uBlock Origin. Chrome on Android doesn’t support extensions, full stop. And if you use Firefox on your computer too, tabs and passwords carry over on their own. And on a phone it matters more than anywhere else: fewer scripts loaded means less data used, less CPU and more battery left in the evening.
Second, Brave, which gets there by another route, with blocking built into the browser. You get less fine-grained control over the rules; in return you configure nothing, and the result holds.
Third, Chrome, very fast and convenient if your digital life already lives inside Google, but the only one on the list that blocks nothing out of the box. Fourth, Samsung Internet, better than its reputation: if you have a Galaxy and don’t need to sync with your computer, it’s a legitimate choice, but it ties you to a single ecosystem. Last, Opera, which blocks on its own and includes a VPN and data saving, but on Android it’s also the one that asks for the most accounts and permissions to do it.
How much blocking really matters
On a phone, load time isn’t decided by the browser: it’s decided by how much stuff the page downloads. Here one number matters, and on a phone you pay it twice: with blocking on, downloaded data falls by 39% (AdGuard 2025 report, 119 news sites).
That 39% is gigabytes of traffic you don’t use and, above all, radio and CPU that stay off: that’s where you see the battery at the end of the day, far more than in the choice between one browser and another. The full accounting, load times and network requests per page, is in the desktop ranking, because it holds the same way on every device.
Who uses what: market share

These numbers mostly say which phone people are holding: Safari grows where iPhones grow, Chrome is the default everywhere. The most-used browser has almost never been chosen by anyone: it’s just the one that was already there.

The ranking positions, on the other hand, are my own judgement, based on the criteria set out at the start of the article.

Are all browsers on iPhone really the same?
Outside the European Union, yes, under the hood: Apple forces every browsing app to use WebKit, so Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave and Opera on iOS are different interfaces over the same engine as Safari. What changes is sync, features and default privacy, not page load speed. In the European Union alternative engines have been allowed since 2024, but so far almost nobody has adopted them.
Which mobile browser uses the least battery?
On iPhone, Safari: it's the one optimised by the phone's own maker. On Android what weighs most is the ads the page loads, more than the browser itself: according to the AdGuard 2025 report, blocking cuts downloaded data by 39%, and that's data the radio doesn't have to receive and the CPU doesn't have to process. Which is why, for the same browsing, Firefox with uBlock Origin or Brave tend to last longer than Chrome.
Can I use uBlock Origin on Android?
Yes, but only on Firefox for Android, the only mainstream mobile browser that supports extensions in their full version. Chrome on Android doesn't support extensions at all. Brave and Samsung Internet don't use extensions but have built-in blocking, which works well without reaching the same level of control.
Is Samsung Internet worth using on a Galaxy?
If you have a Samsung phone it's a better choice than its reputation suggests: it's fast, integrated with the phone and supports content blockers. The limit is that it ties you to a single ecosystem, so syncing with your computer is less convenient than with Firefox or Chrome.
Is it worth changing the default browser on your phone?
If you browse a lot and ads slow you down, yes: it's the change you notice most, far more than the browser itself. On Android you change it in the default apps settings; on iPhone in Settings, and in the European Union the phone already asks you the first time you open Safari, with a choice screen.
